✹ For today's Wisdom Letter, we have carefully curated five bite-sized quotes from the Canadian poet and novelist, Margaret Atwood (1939).
Quote № 01:
“A lot of people facing fascism didn’t become fascists. I don’t happen to believe that we are all monsters.”
— Margaret Atwood, “The Progressive interview”
Quote № 02:
“I would rather dance as a ballerina, though faultily, than as a flawless clown.”
— Margaret Atwood, “Lady Oracle”
Quote № 03:
“Another belief of mine: that everyone else my age is an adult, whereas I am merely in disguise.”
— Margaret Atwood, “Cat's Eye”
Quote № 04:
“As all historians know, the past is a great darkness, and filled with echoes. Voices may reach us from it; but what they say to us is imbued with the obscurity of the matrix out of which they come; and, try as we may, we cannot always decipher them precisely in the clearer light of our own day.”
— Margaret Atwood, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Quote № 05:
“The fabric of democracy is always fragile everywhere because it depends on the will of citizens to protect it, and when they become scared, when it becomes dangerous for them to defend it, it can go very quickly.”
— Margaret Atwood, “The Progressive interview”

✺ Today’s Questions
Three philosophical questions to foster your curiosity:
Question № 01:
How does our perception of time change as we age, and what implications does this have on our understanding of existence?
Question № 02:
How does fascism manipulate the collective psyche and societal fears to gain and maintain power?
Question № 03:
Can democracy thrive in an era of increasing polarization, misinformation, and distrust in institutions, or does it require fundamental reforms to adapt to changing societal dynamics?

I love the question about our perception of time. As a child the summer was endless, as an adult it ‘feels’ shorter every year. It fits that the way we ‘feel’ is relative to how long we’ve been ‘feeling’ time. The longer we live, the shorter moments feel comparative to the rest of our lives!

The most disturbing realization of my life was when I realized I had just turned 60 and none of my immediate male forbearers survived their 70s. I understand now why so many people adopt religion late in life. They can't accept the finality of our biological life.
