✹ For today's Wisdom Letter, we have carefully curated five bite-sized quotes from the British mathematician and philosopher, Bertrand Russell (1872–1970).
Quote № 01:
“We all have a tendency to think that the world must conform to our prejudices. The opposite view involves some effort of thought, and most people would die sooner than think – in fact they do so.”
— Bertrand Russell, “The ABC of Relativity”
Quote № 02:
“With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway about the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.”
— Bertrand Russell
Quote № 03:
“The pleasure of work is open to anyone who can develop some specialised skill, provided that he can get satisfaction from the exercise of his skill without demanding universal applause.”
— Bertrand Russell, “The Conquest of Happiness”
Quote № 04:
“There are those who blame the Press, but in this I think they are mistaken. The Press is such as the public demands, and the public demands bad newspapers because it has been badly educated.”
— Bertrand Russell, “Education and the Social Order”
Quote № 05:
“Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.”
— Bertrand Russell, “An Outline of Intellectual Rubbish”

Re No 1, I think every novel event or situation as it arises must first get past at some subconscious level that deeply rooted human instinct to choose immediately between flight or fight.
I love Bertrand Russel so much. His books had a huge influence on my life and my personal development. Even if that resulted in serious problems.
At the time I lived in a village in Bavaria. The people there are mostly very conservative and extremely devout Christians. There is a free church evangelical community in this village. The members don't believe, they are absolutely sure, that every single word in the Old and New Testaments comes directly from God and is therefore the absolute truth. And of course they are convinced, that the devil and hell are real and that everyone, who doesn’t follow the rules of the community.
The community is more like a cult with extremely strict rules. They belong to a church in Pennsylvania called Christian Endeavor (CE). There are approximately 10,000 churches in over 40 countries worldwide that belong to Christian Endeavor. There are a particularly large number of congregations in Germany that belong to Christian Endeavor's global network. In Germany they are known by the abbreviation EC.
