"If malice, envy, and hatred are intrinsic to human nature, can the aspiration for a truly just or peaceful society ever be more than an illusion—or is the struggle for justice still meaningful even in the shadow of inevitable human flaws?"

I doubt that there can be a completely just and peaceful society, but this does not mean we ought to cease doing justice and seeking peace.

I think this places me in the realm of what Sowell calls the "constrained vision" and others might call anti-utopian.

I must say I agree with you. I have been thinking of late that humans are born with the potential for evil. Evil is a human trait and does not belong in the animal kingdom. I think we learn not to be evil, well some of us at least. I believe we can have our morality stripped as well where a once seemingly "un-evil" person can become so. I think we must continue to try and find ways of teaching ethics and morality and seemingly continue to fight evil where it arises

I AGREE!!!!! If we can learn from animals we will become human. To be human is to be divine, to care, to be our brother's keeper... not to be flawed as our proverbs like to support. Living on this planet is us BECOMING human. And we can only do that by learning from the animals. This dominion over the earth and the animals - that's the bullshit that feeds the evil...

A great selection of quotes and awesome questions for further reflection. I’m still chewing on the Rawls quote and question.

Quote 3: i see every day...people who will freeload off the hard work of others and yet throw stones when they feel the need...all the while doing nothing to contribute.

Good stuff on this stack, but I'm dismayed to see nothing come up in searches when I enter the names Chantal Delsol and Pierre Manent. Delsol in particular is underrated.

Very interesting Quotes.Quote #1 “A man should be mourned at birth not at his death”,it is a kind of very controversial quote,it is not necessary one way or another as it all depends on circumstances in the family where they are rejoicing birth of their child that they very much wanted and wished,on the other hand at the time of death ,it depends on how that person influenced the lives of their family and fellow men & how much they are going to miss him or other wise.

Quote #2, most of the time the true love that happens between two people doesn’t come as planned,it just clicks and happens but to to fallow through with that love one needs to be generous, full of enthusiasm & ready to compromise,it defies no reasoning.

Quote #4,It is absolutely true and that religion cannot stay rigid & hold on to power over their fallowed ,People who are not allowed to question the beliefs and rituals from their priest or religious authorities ,with each new generation and progression of science in the world if people are not allowed to questions to understand their religion, the people loose faith & choose their own path & religious leaders will loose their power and followers,Quote #5,struggle for just and peaceful society will always continue in human beings as every human has both sides ,good and evil in themselves, results depends on which of these two will win ultimately, good or evil?.

Q#3 is interesting in these times of hypocrites… vs. Those who demand accountability (Afghanistan), seek prosecution of crime (Minneapolis, Seattle, LA), reject false Vaccines, reject redefinition or ignorance of what a Woman is, demand real borders; etc. … they were called/considered “intolerant” … for this reason the quote and the question is addressed….

A Constitution establishes a framework of rules, history informs that framework, people agree upon definitions…. Those demanding “Tolerance” were actually demanding the Chaos they hypocritically ascribed to those they called “intolerant”.

The hypocrites seeking tolerance are the free riders the ones seeking unearned advantages.
